continued growth at kemp little llp drives launch of litigation practice and new partner appointments

april 2007

Kemp Little LLP, the leading UK technology law firm, today announced the launch of its litigation practice with the recruitment of IP/IT partner Paul Garland and additional partner appointments.

Appointment of Paul Garland as first litigation partner

Paul Garland will be joining as a partner on 16 April 2007 to launch the firm's litigation practice.

Paul specialises in the protection and exploitation of intellectual property and technology,   advising on IP dispute resolution through mediation, arbitration and the courts and on IP licensing, particularly trade marks and patents.  Paul qualified as a solicitor in 1997 at Eversheds in London and joins Kemp Little from White & Case's London office.

With Paul's arrival, Kemp Little will for the first time offer a comprehensive IP legal service for technology clients, broadening its technology capability with a dedicated IP and technology litigation practice and deepening its expertise in non-contentious technology IP work, particularly on the software patent and brand exploitation side.

Paul Garland commented, "This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the growth of Kemp Little. IP is increasingly important to the future of the technology sector - to work with and develop the firm's blue chip client base in a market where Kemp Little has a great reputation will be genuinely exciting."

Following a strategy review in 2006 and feedback from client interviews, Kemp Little's focus is on providing a comprehensive range of legal services to clients whose innovation in and use of technology are fundamental to their success. With revenue growth of around 30% in 2006/7 and further ambitious growth forecast for 2007/8, broadening the services offered is a key element of Kemp Little's strategy. Recruiting Garland to set up the firm's litigation practice reflects this decision to broaden the services the firm provides around its technology core.  Dispute resolution is the first of a number of new practice areas, with further expansion planned into additional related areas including competition.

Richard Kemp, senior partner, said: "We are delighted that Paul is joining us. His experience acting for market leading companies in the IP/IT litigation and exploitation areas makes this a great match.  He brings top class dispute resolution skills as we launch and build our litigation capability; and his expertise in brand exploitation and patents rounds out our non-contentious technology IP practice.  Paul's arrival and launching our litigation practice are an important step for us on the road to providing a comprehensive range of legal services for the technology market place as we become the UK's 'go to' technology law firm".

New Appointments

In addition to Paul Garland's arrival, the firm also announced a number of additional appointments.

Andy Moseby becomes the fourth partner in the firm's rapidly expanding corporate group.  Andy joined Kemp Little in 2002 from Olswang and has particular expertise in mobile content and video games.

Chris Middleton becomes a partner in the employment group.  Chris joined Kemp Little from Freshfields in 2002 and has particular expertise in tribunal litigation.

Andy's and Chris' appointments take effect on 1 April 2007, the start of the firm's new financial year.

Paul O'Hare, a partner in the firm's commercial technology group, becomes the firm's fifth equity partner, also on 1 April 2007. Paul joined the firm in 2000, becoming a partner in 2003.

Mark Henley joined Kemp Little's commercial technology group in February 2007 as an associate from Bird & Bird, where he started as a barrister in 1998, requalifying as a solicitor in 2003.

Jeff Goodall becomes an associate in the commercial technology group. Jeff joined in summer 2006 from Simmons & Simmons.

Richard Kemp said: "Andy, Chris, Paul, Mark and Jeff are particularly talented lawyers who are all making outstanding contributions to the development of our practice.  The promotions reflect that all parts of the firm our growing strongly, with 12 new lawyers joining over the last 12 months and our work across the firm up around 30% at year end.  This is a great launch pad for our litigation practice and for our ambitions for the firm as a whole in the year just starting".
